1. ISSUE 4. Scandals are useful because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. As is described in the issue, the author assumes that scandals focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker of reformer ever could will result in the reality that scandals are useful. It"s essentially imperative that the reason and result should be thoroughly analyzed before we reach the conclusion. There might be several explanations of the assumptions of the claimed reason. To begin with, the reason in the statement might not hold true in some scenarios. In addition, with the proviso that the reason takes place in certain situations, it will bring about consequences irrelevant to the claimed result. What"s more, under the condition that the reason proves part of the causes to the core concept of the cause is systematically examined, the conclusion drawn out of which will prove inadequate and ineffective. In my point of view, I hold the opinion of general disagreement towards the statement. My opinion will be greatly strengthened by the following discussion. Admittedly, it is shrewd to acknowledge the truth that this claim, although disadvantaged by some discernable shortcomings, in possession of some values principally in some distinct cases in which the embedded reasoning comply with our common sense and understanding as human beings, hence, is partially indisputable. After all, one could effortlessly imagine the scenario, in which the scandals of Prime Minister Berlusconi and Prime Minister Gordon Brown will, to some extent, arouse our attention to the misbehavior of corruption. Accordingly, I tend to concede that when it comes to some certain circumstances if is partially appropriate. However, as opposed to the alleged result, the reason in the statement might not hold true in some scenarios in the sense that it is not true that scandals focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker of reformer ever could: Martin Luther King, one of the principal leaders of the American civil rights movement and a prominent advocate of nonviolent protest. King"s challenges to segregation and racial discrimination in the 1950s and 1960s helped convince many white Americans to support the cause of civil rights in the United States. It is undeniable that his speech speaks much louder than many forged scandals. Unless the reason proves valid and reasonable, the consequences will not surely take places. In addition, instead of leading to the assumed consequence, scandals might generate a divergent outcome that doesn"t get our serious concerns, which is irrelevant for the cause of being useful. Marilyn Monroe did reportedly have an affair with President John F. Kennedy and his brother Senator Robert Kennedy. It"s highly assumed that the Kennedys are associated with the death of Monroe. Since the murder was not convicted and Kennedy was able to improve the economic condition in America to a great extent at the time: The economy turned around and prospered during the Kennedy administration. GDP expanded by an average of 5.5% from early 1961 to late 1963, while inflation remained steady at around 1%and unemployment eased; industrial production rose by 15%and motor vehicle sales leapt by 40%. This rate of growth in GDP and industry continued until around 1966, and has yet to be repeated for such a sustained period of time. Kennedy was deemed more as a national hero than a criminal. The unconfirmed scandals will not be effective and useful. Furthermore, in spite of the face that scandals may possibly result in being useful, yet it is for from sufficient enough to reach the conclusion. It is only at the moment that some other factors are associated with it that the result will take place undeniable. To begin with, scandals must prove valid with solid evidence and conviction. In addition, the society is a majorly law-abiding community rather than one in chaos and turmoil where survival is the primary concerns for all its citizens. From the aforementioned analyses, simply based on the inadequate assumption that scandals focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could, it is irrational to reach an agreement that the are useful, in the sense that only when the cause an be associated with other relevant factors, will the result undeniably take place. On the other hand, the cause might as well arrive at a direction divergent from the alleged result. Without elucidated prerequisites and sufficient evidence mentioned above, any inference and supposition seemingly from it will be incongruous and irrational. 82. Colleges and universities should require their students to spend at least one semester studying in a foreign country. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position. 2. ARGUMENT 113/126/127/161 113. The following is a recommendation from the personnel director to the president of Acme Publishing Company. "Many other companies have recently stated that having their employees take the Easy Read Speed-Reading Course has greatly improved productivity. One graduate of the course was able to read a 500-page report in only two hours; another graduate rose from an assistant manager to vice president of the company in under a year. Obviously, the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb in a single workday. Moreover, Easy Read would cost Acme only $500 per employee-a small price to pay when you consider the benefits. Included in this fee is a three-week seminar in Spruce City and a lifelong subscription to the Easy Read newsletter. Clearly, Acme would benefit greatly by requiring all of our employees to take the Easy Read course." Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted. 152/153 bm171 152. The following appeared in a memo to the board of directors of Bargain Brand Cereals. "One year ago we introduced our first product, Bargain Brand breakfast cereal. Our very low prices quickly drew many customers away from the top-selling cereal companies. Although the companies producing the top brands have since tried t o compete with us by lowering their prices and although several plan to introduce their own budget brands, not once have we needed to raise our prices to continue making a profit. Given our success in selling cereal, we recommend that Bargain Brand now expand its business and begin marketing other low-priced food products as quickly as possible." Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
